Women in Media was founded in 2016 by a group of students at the University of Manchester, each hoping to break into the media industry.
Even in student media, we noticed that editors, presenters, and interviewees were dominated by men – and we were acutely aware that it only got worse the further up you got.
We decided something needed to change. In 2016 we held our first Women in Media conference in Manchester, and we grew from there. Nine annual conferences later, we’re still growing!
Our objective is to ensure every woman seeking a career in the media industry has the networking and mentoring opportunities to make it – irrespective of their background, location, or employment history. After all, it really shouldn’t be all about “who you know”, but rather “what you know”.
Students are at the forefront of everything we do. We have WIM societies at universities across the UK, and our annual Women in Media Conference – now entering its tenth year – continues to be run by students at the University of Manchester.
We want to give every single aspiring woman in media the opportunity to make their career dream a reality.
